Buy Popcorn from the Boy Scouts – Support our Troops! Tuesday, Oct 30 2007

Did you know that you can purchase a $25 tin of popcorn from any Boy Scout of America this Fall ~ and it will be sent to the US Troops serving our country in every part of the world?  Once again, BSA and Trail’s End Popcorn are offering the opportunity to Support Our Troops by this generous and delicious contribution!  The tins are filled with specially popped and packaged Cheese Popcorn.  It’s made to withstand every type of weather, and has a long shelf life – making certain that no matter what country it ends up in, our brave men and women will have a wonderful treat this holiday season.

Don”t know any Boy Scouts?  No problem!  You can still donate and send a Tin to our soldiers.  Simply visit www.trails-end.com and follow the links to Support Our Troops Popcorn.

And remember – the donation may be tax deductible!  Here’s a picture from the Support Our Troops website, of just a small shipment of the more than 107 tons of popcorn sent overseas:

Fall Color Abounds In October! Friday, Sep 29 2006

2007 Fall Color Reports display picture perfect color…

“During the months of September, October, and early November, The Foliage Network provides foliage reports which are updated twice per week. The updates are posted on Wednesday and Saturday. Visit this site to keep updated on the progression of the foliage season.

So where does the information come from? The Foliage Network has over 550 spotters that report on the foliage conditions in their area. The reports are submitted twice per week and are then compiled and analyzed by The Foliage Network. The data is then plotted and a foliage map is generated. Finally, these maps are posted to The Foliage Network web site and transmitted to newspapers throughout the United States.” So says The Foliage Network, the source for accurate foliage information.

Looking for that perfect Fall Getaway? Top of my recommended list would have to be Northern Michigan. Fall color is awe inspiring there in October. Imagine yourself tucked away in a cozy, romantic room at The Veranda at Harbor Springs… “The Veranda at Harbor Springs is a landmark institution. It was built over 100 years ago in Petoskey, Michigan, and pulled across the ice by horses to its present location in Harbor Springs. The Veranda has enjoyed a very colorful history and, for the past century, has welcomed guests and travelers as both a boarding house and a bed and breakfast inn.”
Wishing you a beauty inspired Autumn, no matter where in the United States you might be…

A Canadian Thanksgiving Thursday, Sep 28 2006

A Canadian Thanksgiving

Canadian Thanksgiving is Monday, October 9, 2006

The first Canadian Thanksgiving was celebrated on April 15, 1872 in thanks for the recovery of the future King Edward VII from a serious illness. The next Thanksgiving didn’t occur until 1879 when it was celebrated on a Thursday in November.

Setting a Date
Much like the United States, Canada seemed to have a difficult time deciding when a day of Thanksgiving should occur. From 1879 to 1898 it was celebrated on a Thursday in November; from 1899 to 1907 on a Thursday in October (except in 1901 and 1904 when it was celebrated on a Thursday in November); from 1908 to 1921 on a Monday in October; and between 1922 and 1930 the Armistice Day Act declared that Thanksgiving would be celebrated on Armistice Day, the Monday of November 11. In 1931 the Act was amended and the old practice of Parliament declaring a day of Thanksgiving each year was resumed.

On January 31, 1957 Parliament issued a proclamation to fix permanently the second Monday in October as “a day of general Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.”

Much like the United States’ Thanksgiving Day, the Canadian celebration includes parades and festive meals, often including turkey and all the “fixins.” Yet, again, at the heart of the celebration is the idea of giving thanks for the goodness of the season past.

Preserving Your Cherished Silver Wednesday, Sep 20 2006

Preserving Your Cherished Silver

My first recommendation to all owners of cherished silver pieces, whether it’s flatware, candle holders, or holloware is don’t feel rushed when cleaning and storing it! With proper care, handling, and cleaning – silver will provide more than one lifetime of joy. Have a treasured family piece that you’d like to display? Do it! Afraid it will tarnish too quickly if not packed away? No problem, there are ways of cleaning it that will slow the tarnish down and provide brilliant shine.

I’m always amazed at the ‘new’ variations I read about for cleaning silver. A popular one is toothpaste. Who started this nasty news? Toothpaste has ingredients such as baking soda that are very abrasive and will greatly damage your silver! Never use toothpaste!

Silver Dips. While some are very reputable, they are not for the novice! Experts who know what they’re doing will use dips when longer duration soaks are required, but too much soaking can easily pit the finish, which is irrepairable! Why take the chance? Stay away from them unless you are SURE you know what you’re doing.

There are some very fine products available either online or right in your grocery store that are preferable for cleaning your silver. I highly recommend Wright’s® Silver Polish for most all of your silver cleaning tasks. It’s gentle and is water based, so the cleaning ingredients are suspended for quick rinse and virtually no residue. Also, always use a cello sponge when cleaning your silver, if possible.

Lots more information to pass your way…check back often!

Centerstage on your table – The Fall Centerpiece Tuesday, Sep 19 2006

I love Autumn! Decorating your table is so much fun when you can bring the outdoors in, and making a simple centerpiece really makes a statement for your guests. Here are a couple I love to use. Get creative! You probably have everything you need right around your home…you just need to pick your theme and get started. Get the kids involved – they might actually sit through an entire meal if they’ve invested in the decorating!

Pumpkins…Gourds…Artichoke…Bell Peppers…Assorted Garden Berries, Fall Leaves…whatever you have, use it!

Setting a proper table Tuesday, Sep 19 2006

A proper silverware setting follows one simple rule, no matter how formal or relaxed the event: Set the silverware on the table in the order it will be used, from the outside in. The fork for the first course is the one farthest to the left; to the right of the plate, the knife for the first course is the farthest to the right. Any spoons needed before dessert (say, a soupspoon), should be placed to the right of the knives. Dessert utensils should always be placed horizontally above the plate, or they can be brought in later, with the dessert course.

Here’s a simple layout to use:
